The History of Diwali

The Festival of Lights, or Diwali, is a five-day festival recognized and celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains all over the world which celebrates the victory of light over darkness or good over evil. The festival takes place somewhere between the middle of October and the middle of November. Diwali is celebrated with the lighting of oil filled clay lamps, the wearing of new clothes by all participants, and the sharing of traditional foods. For many Indian communities Diwali marks the first day of the financial year.
