The History of Hanukkah
Every winter, Jewish families spend eight days in celebration of a miraculous time in history. We know it today as Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, and we often see Hanukkah cards out next to other holiday cards. But amidst the traditional foods and beautiful menorah- what is Hanukkah really about?
In the second century, a man named Judah the Maccabee led a group to boldly reclaim the temple in Jerusalem after having been taken in foreign occupation. They began preparation to rededicate the temple, but soon found that there was only enough oil to burn the temple candles- the Menorah- for one day. Miraculously, the oil lasted for eight full days, until they were able to reach more purified oil.
The Meaning of Hanukkah
Hanukkah, meaning "dedication," commemorates each of these eight days with the lighting of candles and a celebration of miraculous provision. Children play dreidel games, Hanukkah songs are sung, and everyone looks forward to the delicious Hanukkah food – baked or fried in oil, symbolizing the oil that lasted the eight days. Everything holds rich meaning, like the Hanukkah song Rock of Ages, recounting the events in celebration.
When is Hanukkah?
You might have noticed that Hanukkah is never quite at the same time each year. So, when is Hanukkah? Because the Jewish calendar is different than ours today, you must check against the Jewish calendar to know when to celebrate. Hanukkah 2011 begins on December 20.
As you look ahead in your holiday preparations, check out the Tiny Prints collection of Hanukkah cards. Put a visit to Tiny Prints on your Hanukkah 2011 calendar, and you might find a new family tradition along the way. Happy Hanukkah, and L'Chaim!
