The relationships among mothers-in-law and their daughters-in-law vary. For example, some are close, while others are distant but polite. However, when you are a mother-in-law, no matter the type of relationship you have with your daughter-in-law, choosing gifts may be difficult. Here are a few ideas to make the process easier.
Begin the gift selection process with cards, for example, Mother’s Day cards for a daughter-in-law. The cards can set the theme and tone of the gift; a funny card could signal a creative or humorous gift. On the other hand, a heartfelt card could be a great precursor to a serious gift. Either way, categories such as home decor teem with many customizable ideas. By picking out the card first, you select something that sparks gift-giving ideas. Does the card feature a beach scene? Then the gift could be beach-related. You can always take advantage of gift cards too; putting one for a spa day in the card, for instance, or a gift card for your daughter-in-law’s favorite shop or restaurant.
Try to avoid giving your daughter-in-law something you know she will not appreciate. You may really enjoy a certain clothing store or a certain type of clothes. You may think the clothes flatter your daughter-in-law, but if she simply is not into that store or style, the gift could be viewed as passive aggressive. Instead, listen to your daughter-in-law through her words and behaviors. Note how she expresses herself through her clothes. If she dresses in an arty style, she may appreciate an artistic vase as opposed to an antique vase. Try to identify her pain points; is she tired? Overworked? Offer to send her and your son out for a spa day while you babysit.
If you are unsure whether your daughter-in-law will most appreciate gifts that are practical, extravagant or pretty, take note of her interests and ask around. Choosing the card first is also a great way to make the process of shopping for gifts easier.
"I love this 5x7 Easel. It's small enough to fit on my desk at work. It has enough slots to capture my 3 precious children."
"This is my 2nd canvas print ordered from Tiny prints. I was so pleased with the quality of the 1st that I would never order elsewhwhere. The second photo turned out amazing. I captured my pregnancy and a picture of my son"
"I ordered these for my daughter to give to her friends. They are adorable and the perfect size. I like that they don't have a "to:" line, so she can pass them out without having to fill in specific names first. One will make a cute keepsake for me too."
"I got these cards for my 2-year old son to pass out to his pre-school class and teachers and family members. They are beautifully printed on soft thick paper. I love the size, they are pretty small, but come with their own tiny envelopes! Very happy with my purchase."
"I used this card for our Valentines Day/ birth announcement and I have gotten texts, emails and phone calls complimenting this card how gorgeous it was! If you want a wow factor....this is your card!!"
